Colored Cupcakes

Busy and I decided to do some baking today! I love cooking with her in the real and pretend kitchen. She loves measuring and pouring and mixing and especially tasting :) I had a box of cake mix in the pantry so we didn't make anything from scratch this time, although that way is much more involved and fun. So since we were baking using the abbreviated version, I figured we would do something a little different. Busy helped me put the cake mix and all of the ingredients in the mixing bowl then turn on the mixer. We then poured the mix in a cupcake pan (only filling up the cups up about 1/3 of the way). Then we put one drop of food coloring in each of the cups (red, blue, yellow and green).

Then we swirled the colors with a knife then poured the mix in the cups covering the colors.

We popped them in the oven, and made our predictions about what was going to happen to the colors once the cupcakes were done.

When they were done, she wasted no time testing her theory that the colors were going to be hidden in the cupcake.

"I was right, Mommy!!! There is the red!"

And of course she had to eat another one to make sure she could find the green :)

All in all, it was a success. For a more dramatic effect, you can add more food coloring and swirl it more. You can also put more than just one color per cupcake.
